Cleaning Rug with Hands

Biokleen Carpet & Rug Shampoo Concentrate

Biokleen Carpet & Rug Shampoo Concentrate is a fully organic carpet and rug cleaner for your home. It aims to be not only more gentle than the average detergent for delicate rugs and carpets but also much healthier and safer thanks to a lack of synthetic chemicals and toxins.

This product claims to offer a natural way to keep carpets and rugs free from dust and bacteria. It can also be used on stains and odors and will have no negative effect on the fabrics it is used on. Most importantly, it doesn’t include any harmful ingredients, which makes it safe to use around children.

What’s important to remember when using carpet and rug cleaners, is that these are inevitably going to come into direct contact with you and your family. If you wash your rug and then relax on it your arms and neck will be directly pressed against it. And whatever touches the skin gets absorbed into the blood stream!

Child Playing on a Rug

That’s why using bleach, ammonia and other powerful products is a bad idea and can damage your health – let alone what it does to the carpet. Products like Biokleen however claim to help put this issue to bed. Let’s see how it holds up…

The first pro about this product is that it is fully transparent and open about its choice of ingredients. This is something you won’t always see but it’s something that you should always look for. If a company won’t reveal its ingredients, then the question is ‘why not’?

The specific ingredients at play here are:

  • Surfactants from coconut and/or corn
  • Grapefruit seed and pulp extract
  • Orange peel extract
  • Linear sulfonate
  • Filtered water

Another pro is that the product is very versatile and highly effective for an organic solution. One reviewer had this to say:

Amazing stuff. We just bought a house with really stained (formerly) white carpets and this has brought them back to their original color. There is NO perfumey, chemical smell like other so-called "carpet cleaners". (My mom use to use Bissle cleaner with her houseful of dogs and it just smelled like wet-dogs plus perfume... Not the scent I'm going for in my house...)

When poured in the machine, BioKleen has a refreshing grapefruit scent. Upon application, there seems to be a very faint citris scent, but it's an actual citrus scent, not perfumery or fake smelling. And seriously, I got down on my hands and knees to smell the carpet after cleaning and there is NO smell! Just perfectly clean carpets on what use to be this horrible wet-dog smell.

On the negative side, this product does use one worrying ingredient:

  • Surfactants from coconut and/or corn

Now surfactants are a common concern in non-organic cleaners so the question is whether coconut-based surfactants will be a lot healthier. Unfortunately, this is a hard question to answer seeing as its actually quite a vague term and can refer to anything from coco glucoside to SLES. In this case, we will have to take Biokleen at its word!

In all likelihood, this is nothing harmful and rather is just a slightly poor choice of working.

In conclusion, this is a great choice of organic carpet cleaner that has a lot of very rave reviews. It does the job well and has a well thought-out ingredients list on the whole. A very good way to clean your carpets without the health risks!
